Background of the Study
Phonetics, the study of speech sounds, is increasingly relevant in digital communication as users share audio content on social media. In Nigeria, Twitter has emerged as a platform where users post audio clips that reflect diverse phonetic innovations. These clips often reveal variations in pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm that diverge from standard speech, influenced by regional accents and the informal nature of digital dialogue (Ikechukwu, 2023). This study examines Nigerian phonetic variation by comparing audio clips posted on Twitter. It explores how digital constraints—such as character limits and the immediacy of voice recordings—affect phonetic realization and lead to novel speech patterns. The research analyzes the acoustic features of these clips, considering both technological and socio-cultural factors that contribute to phonetic innovation. By situating these findings within established phonetic theory, the study provides insights into how digital media fosters changes in spoken language (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although audio content on Twitter is becoming increasingly popular, there is limited research on its phonetic implications in Nigerian digital discourse. Traditional phonetic studies often focus on formal speech, neglecting the spontaneous, informal nature of online audio. This gap limits our understanding of how technological and social factors influence phonetic variation in digital environments. This study addresses this deficiency by analyzing audio clips from Nigerian Twitter users, aiming to uncover the mechanisms driving phonetic innovation in digital communication (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze phonetic features in Nigerian Twitter audio clips.
To compare phonetic variations across different digital contexts.
To identify factors influencing phonetic change.
Research Questions:
What phonetic variations are evident in Twitter audio clips?
How do digital factors affect these variations?
What socio-cultural influences contribute to phonetic innovation?
Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into digital phonetics by examining Nigerian Twitter audio content. Its findings inform both linguistic theory and digital media research, highlighting how online communication shapes spoken language (Ikechukwu, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to Nigerian Twitter audio clips.
Definitions of Terms:
Phonetics: The study of speech sounds.
Audio Clips: Recorded voice messages on digital platforms.
Digital Discourse: Communication via online media.
